South Carolina Historical Society
The South Carolina Historical Society (SCHS) proposes to digitize over 8,000 pages of eighteenth and nineteenth century manuscripts materials that bear witness to the experiences of enslaved persons in South Carolina. The 2005 publication Slave Records in the Manuscript Collection of the South Carolina Historical Society: A Catalog is the analog antecedent upon which the proposed project is built. Over a two-year timeline, the SCHS will digitize and describe roughly 8,000 scans of materials selected for this project. Digitized archival objects that fall under this umbrella will be digitized and made available through the College of Charleston’s Lowcountry Digital Library (LCDL). Scholars, genealogists, students, and educators will have unlimited access to letters, diaries, ledgers, images, ephemeral objects, and other pieces of the historic record that carry evidence of the lived experiences of enslaved persons in South Carolina.
